Name of Artist: Jan Groover
Dates of Artist's Life: Born: April 24th, 1943
Died: January 1st, 2012
Personal Background: She was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. She is American. Jan Groover acquired a BFA in painting from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She also got a MA in Art Education from Ohio State University. Sometime, towards the end of her life, she moved from Manhattan to France (Montpon-Menestrol). She died there in 2012.
Style: Jan Groover's imager are still lives. Her images usually have very dark colors and have objects strewn all over the place. There usually closeup pictures so you never get the complete picture of the item, leaving the viewer to wonder. I like how careless the items look strewn, like planned but not yet planned. The darkness is kind of eerie but makes the photo more interesting, it also makes you look at the objects differently.
Philosophy: Jan Groover was a type of person who wouldn't let anything or anyone get in her way. She turned ordinary pictures into something more interesting. Her photos also carried a feministic quality. They are also really formal.
Influences: This photographer has influenced me in many ways. I admire the simplicity of her photos, I also like the formality of her photos. In the future, I would like my photos to be simple yet complicated with clear composition.
